August & September Wrap-Up

September was a fairly good reading month for me, and that gives me a reason to write a monthly wrap-up. I skipped doing this post in August because I barely read anything. It was one hell of an exhausting month and trying to read was a challenge on its own. I couldn’t read more than 3 pages without start closing my eyes. It was amazing that I even managed to finish anything.

August

On the first days of the month, I finished The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Tailor Jenkins Reid that I had started in Jully. I had a great time reading it. Evelyn is one of my favourite characters of all time, and you can know all about it on my review. I loved Evelyn, but I didn’t love the book as much as I did love her. I thought this book was over-hyped, although it’s still a really good book that I recommend everyone to read.

I didn’t read much in August, and I’m just realizing now that I read was some really nice books. The other book I finished was Cold Woods by Karen Katchur, the second novel on the Northampton County series. And no, I never read the first book of this series. Luckily, this is one of those series that you don’t need to read in order. Each book has its own story, and only the main character keeps coming back. I enjoyed a lot the time jumps between the past and the present. The story is about a murder from 30 years ago, and it’s linked to an abusive relationship, so I’ll leave her my trigger warning. I have a full review on my Goodreads that you can read and know more about the trigger warnings for this book.

September

September starts, and I finally have time to read again. Maybe keep on pushing myself to read helped to get out of the reading slump that I have been for the past I-don’t-know-how-many months or maybe it was reading The End of The World Survivors Club by Adrian J. Walker. I loved being in a post-apocalyptic world, and even though I would enjoy this book more if I actually read the first one – yes this is also a series, and I’m once again reading the second book without any prior knowledge – I still had a great time. But not everything was perfect, I still had my problem with it. Again, you can read a more in-depth review on the post I did for the blog tour.

Another blog tour I participated in September was for Lost Solace by Karl Drinkwater. This is the book with the shortest cast of characters that I ever read, and all the scientific and astronomical explanation are very well researched to the point that it started to be a little hard for me to follow. If you enjoy sci-fi, AIs, and a kick-ass female heroine, you should pick up this book. What you shouldn’t pick up expecting a full Christmas story is Christmas by the Lighthouse by Rebecca Boxall. The book is nice, it’s a cute, fluffy romance, but it’s not set during Christmas. There is a reason for the title, and I understand it, but it’s misleading. If you enjoy romantic Hallmark movies, you probably will enjoy this book. The story was captivating just not Christmassy has I was expecting.

Although not everything is a disappointment. Seeking the Truth by Carbone, a french graphic novel series called Through Lya’s Eyes is an example of that. The illustrations are by Justine Cunha and are clean, cute, and full of colour. The story is about a girl (Lya) that was run over by a car, and now it’s paralysed from the waist down. Although she is a force of nature, she doesn’t use the wheelchair as an excuse, and she’s happy and funny. I thought this story was going to be gloomy and sad, instead, Lya is vibrant, full of life, and someone you what to be friends with. Unfortunately, this book ended in a major cliffhanger, and I can’t find a date for the second volume, which makes me very sad. I hope they write the next one *crosses all fingers*

In addiction to finish all these books, I also started 3 more, because I have no self-control! I’ve been eyeing Day 21 by Kass Morgan, the second book on The 100 series, on my shelf, and I had to give in the need to read it. I have so much passion for the TV show, and I’m glad that all that love was also transmitted to the books. I can’t get enough of this series, and I’m started to get a little worried that it only has four books, and by the rhythm of the story, I don’t see it developing as much as I would like it too. If I had started these books when I had only watched the first or second season, I probably wouldn’t have this feeling. But after six seasons, I’m kind off worried that the characters from the book are still in the same place after all this time. Please note, I haven’t finished this book yet, so they might go somewhere else.

Another book that I started was Lady in the Lake by Laura Lippman. I’ve read a Lippman book already this year, Sunburn which came out last year, and Lady in the Lake came out in July. I got an ARC for it that I meant to read back then, and I completely forgot about it, so now I really need to finish it. Even though Sunburn wasn’t a favourite book, I love her female characters and her writing style, so I’ll be coming back for more.

Against all odds, I finally picked up One Child by Torey Hayden that a friend lent to me. I’m not really into true stories because the book not always does/have what it promises. Since it is a real story the writer needs to leave it has it is, there is no adding a romance or more drama because that would turn into fiction based on real events. And what I’m finding so far is the book isn’t told the way I was expecting nor is telling what I want to read. A lot of people love this book, but I need to skim through it to move along some of the most personal stuff related to Hayden. When I picked up this book, it wasn’t to read about her, but instead to read about the little girl, Sheila.

Bottom line, I’m starting October with three books… wait… no, FOUR books, because I’m also listening to Christmas in Winter Hill by Melody Carlson on Spotify. I have a dedicated post for my TBR, that I now realize it’s wrong because I forgot about one book. If you want to be up to date with my reading, you can follow or befriend me on Goodreads or just wait for the end of the month for more bookish news.
